Zoom Releases Major Enhancements to
Internet Telephony Products
Boston, MA, April 4, 2005 — Zoom
Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:
ZOOM),
a leading provider of communications products since 1977, today
announced major on-board software enhancements to its
ZoomTel‘ Voice over the Internet (VoIP) product line,
including the Zoom X5v and V3. The X5v is an ADSL modem with
built-in VoIP, router, 4-port switching hub, and firewall.
The V3 is similar, but substitutes an Ethernet port for the
ADSL modem to enable plug-in operation with a separate DSL
modem, cable modem, or an Ethernet network.
Zoom began shipping its critically acclaimed VoIP products
in the second quarter of 2004. The new firmware features
add the capabilities that Internet phone service providers
have most frequently asked for, including Quality of Service
(QoS), STUN support, and other enhancements.
The Quality of Service feature means that the ZoomTel hardware
prioritizes voice data packets over other packets so that
voice quality remains high, even when there is substantial
non-voice traffic.
STUN is a protocol used by service providers to reliably
deliver voice traffic through a NAT firewall or router. STUN
would typically be used when the Zoom V3 is placed behind
a separate NAT firewall (i.e., not the V3’s) in a home
or office.
“These are important improvements to our award-winning
VoIP product line,” said Frank Manning, Zoom’s
President and CEO. “Some of our major customers have
been waiting for these improvements, and we are now positioned
to significantly
grow our revenues in the VoIP market.”
