New Antennas Extend the Range of Zoom's Wireless LAN Products
Now Shipping Companion Antennas
to ZoomAir Wireless Network Interface Cards
Boston, MA, November 9, 1999 - Zoom Telephonics, Inc.
(NASDAQ: ZOOM)
is shipping a new line of antennas which extend the range
and increase the throughput of a ZoomAir wireless local area
network (LAN). New antenna products include Omni-directional,
Directional and Dipole models which can provide LAN connections
at distances of up to one mile (1.6 km). ZoomAir Wireless
LAN products provide high-performance, high-speed networking
without wires. Using IEEE standard 802.11 DSSS technology,
ZoomAir provides a 2 Mbps data rate and reliable, secure data
communications. ZoomAir can be used as an easily-installed
primary network, or as a valuable addition to a wired network.
The ZoomAir 4.0 dBi Omni-Directional Antenna (Model
#98110-04) can be mounted on a ceiling for use as an omni-directional
antenna, or mounted on a wall to provide increased range in
a single direction. Typical range of a ZoomAir NIC and the
Model 98110-04 antenna when mounted on a ceiling is a radius
of 380 feet (115 m) in a partitioned office and 1275 feet
(390 m) in an unobstructed environment. When mounted vertically,
the directional range is approximately 450 feet (135 m) in
a partitioned office and 1500 feet (455 m) in an unobstructed
environment. The suggested retail price of the Model 98110-04
antenna with mounting hardware is $98. The ZoomAir
13.0 dBi Directional Antenna (Model #98110-13) provides a
range of up to one mile (1.6 km) for point-to-point applications.
This antenna is typically used to link two line-of-sight computers
or a ZoomAir Access Point and a remote computer. It can be
used either indoors or outdoors. The suggested retail price
of the Model 98110-13 antenna with a heavy-duty mounting bracket
is $180. The ZoomAir Model #4007 Wireless Network
Interface Card (NIC) comes equipped with a 3.25 inch long,
2.2 dBi Dipole Antenna. When compared to the integrated antenna
of the Model 4000 and 4005 ZoomAir NICs, the dipole antenna
provides more uniform coverage and up to 30% greater range.
The suggested retail price of the Model 4007 ZoomAir NIC is
$249. External ZoomAir antennas are easily installed
by simply replacing the dipole on the Model 4007 NIC with
a Directional or Omni-Directional antenna in a simple plug-out/plug-in
operation. One-meter and three-meter length low-loss coaxial
cables are available to provide additional flexibility in
the placement of the external antennas. Joining cables allows
the length to be extended to a maximum of six meters.
ZoomAir external antennas are approved for use in the United
States and Canada. Zoom's Web Site contains detailed
